Theon van Dijk

Theon van Dijk is a Partner at RBB Economics based in Amsterdam and Brussels. Prior to joining RBB in March 2022, Theon was the Chief Economist at the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM). In that position he was the main economic advisor to ACM’s Board in relation to decisions on mergers and behavioural practices, telecommunications and energy regulation, consumer protection and ACM’s sustainability agreement guidelines.

Before his position as ACM’s Chief Economist, Theon has been working for various Dutch, German and international economic consultancies. He has nearly 25 years’ experience of presenting economic evidence on behalf of clients involved in complex, high-stakes competition matters, across a wide range of industries.

Theon has extensive experience (nearly 25 years) in applying competition and regulation economics to practical cases, mostly as an economic consultant to private parties. He has prepared and presented economic evidence on complex competition cases before the European Commission as well as national competition authorities in the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, France and the United Kingdom.

Theon’s work has covered a wide range of markets and all areas of competition law enforcement, including merger control, dominance and abusive behaviour, cartels, horizontal and vertical agreements, and sector inquiries. Theon has acted as expert witness in numerous civil and administrative court proceedings in the Netherlands and Belgium and was appointed as arbitrator in intellectual property disputes. In addition to competition law economics, he has significant experience in sector-specific regulation, including in electronic communications and energy.

Theon publishes regularly on the economics of merger control, damages calculation, articles 101 and 102 TFEU, sustainability agreements, intellectual property and licensing agreements.

He holds a PhD from Maastricht University, where he undertook research on the competitive effects of patent protection.

Between 2013 and 2015 Theon was the Chief Economist at the European Patent Office and based in Munich.
