Richard Murgatroyd
Richard Murgatroyd is a Partner at RBB Economics. He joined the firm in 2004 and has been a Partner since 2011. Richard has led RBB Economics teams on wide range of litigation matters and competition law investigations, across a wide range of industries and in a variety of jurisdictions.
Richard has been instructed as an expert witness on more than 30 occasions, and has given expert witness testimony under cross examination many times, before high courts, specialist tribunals and arbitration panels.
Richard has significant experience in the sphere of competition litigation, including authority appeals, standalone claims and follow-on damages actions (including class and group actions). This has included acting as an expert on behalf of both claimants and defendants. Richard has also acted as an economic expert on various litigious matters outside of competition law, including contractual disputes, regulatory disputes and non-competition damages claims.
Outside of litigation, Richard has a broad range of experience of administrative proceedings, spanning both horizontal and non-horizontal aspects of mergers, exclusionary abuses of dominance, exploitative abuses (including both excessive pricing and unfair terms), vertical agreements, horizontal agreements and market investigations. He has advised clients on such matters before the European Commission, various European national authorities and many African authorities (including COMESA). High-profile clients include AB InBev/SAB, British American Tobacco, Coca-Cola, Comcast, PETRONAS, Prosus, Sasol, Telkom, Total, Transnet, Unilever, ViacomCBS and Vitol.
Richard has spoken widely on competition issues and has published journal articles on a range of topics, such as buyer power, excessive pricing and merger assessment techniques. He has also lectured judges and advocates on the application of economics to competition law.
Richard is regularly identified as an expert in the field of competition economics in practitioner guides such as Who’s Who Legal. He holds a BSc (Hons) in Economics from the University of Warwick and an MSc in Economics from the London School of Economics.
