João Matias
João Matias is a Senior Associate based in the Brussels office of RBB Economics. He joined the firm in 2019.
João has advised on a wide range of economic issues before the European Commission, the Competition and Markets Authority in the UK and other national authorities, most notably in Portugal. His experience includes horizontal and vertical mergers, abuses of dominance and anticompetitive agreements.
He holds a masters and undergraduate degrees in Economics from Nova SBE.
Since joining RBB in March 2019, João has worked on cases before the European Commission and before national competition authorities in other jurisdictions, including Portugal, Spain, Italy, and the UK. João has also assisted in the preparation of economic evidence in different competition law proceedings in front of courts.
João's experience covers a wide range of sectors including payment systems, luxury fashion, road fuel, grocery stores, fast-moving consumer goods, and waste management.
João has advised clients on a variety of cases involving complex economic analyses, including horizontal and vertical mergers, alleged abuses of dominance and anticompetitive agreements. His experience includes complex Phase I investigations such as the assessment of local competition issues, and the preparation of merger remedy packages for conditional approvals.
Prior to joining RBB, João worked as a research assistant for a think tank of academic origin.
