Nuno Alvim
Nuno Alvim is a Principal based in the Brussels office of RBB Economics. He has joined the firm in 2012. He holds a PhD in Economics from Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, and an undergraduate degree in Economics from NOVA SBE. He has experience across all areas of competition law and has lectured in microeconomics and economics of competition.
Nuno is listed on Who’s Who Legal, and has been nominated as Economist of the year in the GCR Awards 2020, which highlighted that “his detailed reports are highly praised for being extremely complete and focused on the aspects under discussion.”
Since joining RBB, Nuno has worked on competition issues in a wide range of jurisdictions. He has advised on cases before the European Commission and other national competition authorities, including Portugal, Brazil, UK and Spain. He also worked on litigation cases before national courts in the UK and Portugal.
Nuno’s experience spans all aspects of competition law, including horizontal and vertical mergers, abuses of dominance, anticompetitive agreements, and follow-on damages estimations.
He has experience across several sectors of the economy. He has advised companies in the energy sector, the airline industry, FMCG, the pharmaceutical industry, telecommunications sector, online services, payment services, security services, banking, and waste management. Nuno has worked with clients such as Illumina, Heineken, AB InBev, Sumol+Compal, Alphabet (Google), Telia Company, Banco Santander, Securitas, Amazon, Gasum, JCDecaux, Naspers, Altice, and Zimmer.
Nuno has contributed for reports for competition authorities. These include “Cost pass-through: theory, measurement, and potential policy implications” (2014) published by the Office of Fair Trading as part of its Economic Discussion Paper series and the “Study on the Passing-on of Overcharges” (2016) prepared for and published by DG Competition, European Commission.
He also regularly teaches on competition matters at the Universidade de Lisboa and Universidade Nova de Lisboa, and presents in conferences in Brussels and Lisbon.
