On 13 October 2014, the European Commission unconditionally cleared the merger between Whirlpool and Indesit after a phase I investigation, combining two of the leading producers of major domestic appliances. The Commission’s investigation confirmed the parties’ submissions that they are not particularly close competitors and that customers are likely to find sufficient alternative suppliers in all of the MDA categories and at the different price points currently targeted by the Parties. The Commission ultimately concluded that despite high combined shares in some Member States, the merger was unlikely to reduce the competitive pressure faced by the parties in the current market settings.
