On 29 June 2012 the South African Competition Tribunal overturned an earlier decision by the Competition Commission to prohibit the acquisition of the SamQuarz silica mine from Petmin, by Thaba Chueu Mining, a subsidiary of Spanish Groupo FerroAtlántica.RBB economists advised each of the merging parties throughout the reconsideration of the transaction by the Tribunal, and submitted an expert report which provided an analysis of the competitive effects of the merger and an evaluation of the prohibition decision of the Competition Commission. RBB economist Patrick Smith provided oral testimony during the Tribunal hearing.
